Indian stock markets plunge down sharply over fear of new 'Cold War'

 Chennai, Feb 22 Indian stock markets closed in red on Wednesday, with the Sensex of the BSE going down by 927.74 points and the Nifty of the NSE by 272.40 points.

The markets reacted adversely following Russian President Vladimir Putin's statements and the threat of war escalation, said Mitul Shah, Head of Research at Reliance (NS: RELI ) Securities.

Shah added the crisis in Adani Group stocks worsened as all 10 stocks faced selling pressure. Since the release of the Hindenburg report on January 25, Adani group stocks have lost 60 per cent of their value.

Globally, geopolitical instability persists as Russian President Putin asserted that his war against Ukraine will not end any time soon. Russia also suspended its nuclear treaty with the US.

The Nifty plunged 1.53 per cent to close at 17,554 points the lowest since October 21, 2022, said Devarsh Vakil, Deputy Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities.

"Nifty continued its southward journey for the fourth day in the row on the back of weak global cues and plunged more than 1.5 per cent on Wednesday to close at 17,554, lowest close since October 21, 2022," Vakil said.

According to him, BankNifty fell for the fifth consecutive session to close at 39,996 points. All sectoral Indices ended in the red. Nifty Metal , Media and PSU banks fell the most.

At the BSE, the Sensex opened at 60,391.86 points and touched a high of 60,462.90 points and a low of 59,681.55 points to close at 59,774.98 points.

Will the Warriors sink or swim in the final weeks of the season?

The Golden State Warriors are back in the lab, getting ready to resume the unofficial second half of the season. It always feels weird to call it that ... the Dubs played 58 games before the All-Star break, and they have just 24 remaining. That’s a lot less than half.

But while the All-Star break may not cut the season in half, it does serve as the perfect intermission between acts. With the exception of Draymond Green, who spent the days off in Salt Lake City working for TNT, all of the Warriors got to take a week off.

And now they’re back at practice, preparing for Sunday’s showdown with the Los Angeles Lakers — a team they beat on opening night, but lost to just 10 days ago.

The Warriors are in a funny spot. At an even 29-29, they’re sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference, in the dreaded bottom half of the play-in. They’re only one game ahead of the the 11th seed, which misses the playoffs entirely. But they’re also only one game out of the sixth seed, which bypasses the play-in entirely. And they’re only two-and-a-half games out of the fourth seed, which has home court advantage. Their range of reasonable outcomes stretches from repeating as the third seed to missing the play-in tournament entirely.

A lot of factors will impact where they land on that spectrum. Here are six of the biggest ones.

Steph Curry’s health

This list isn’t in any particular order, but it is safe to say that Curry’s health is the single biggest factor in what happens for the final 24 games. The Dubs’ record this year hasn’t changed too much with Curry out — they’re 9-11 when he sits, and 20-18 when he plays — but make no mistake. He’s as vital to his team’s success as any player in the NBA.

He’s also injured, and we’re not sure for how long. The team’s latest update simply said he’d be re-evaluated after the All-Star break, but that doesn’t tell us much at all. Will he be back next week? Next month? Next season?

A reminder that the Warriors won a championship four of the last five times that Curry, Green, and Klay Thompson ended a season healthy, and came damn close the fifth time. You can’t count this team out if Curry’s healthy. But you can if he isn’t.

Gary Payton II’s health

Curry isn’t the only guard whose health will play a huge role in the remaining two months. Golden State made only one upgrade at the trade deadline, shipping off the ultra-talented but equally raw James Wiseman in exchange for Payton ... only to find out that GPII was injured.

He’ll be re-evaluated in mid-March, and Bob Myers said the team hopes Payton will be back before the season ends on April 9. But at this point, GPII’s health is a gigantic question mark.

The biggest difference between the Warriors team that won a title last year and this year’s team is the defense. Last year the Dubs ranked second in the NBA in defense, and fourth in road defense, per Cleaning the Glass. This year they’re 16th and 28th, respectively. Payton is not only one of the premier perimeter defenders in the association, but he’s defensively versatile enough to allow Steve Kerr to use more creative defensive schemes. Remember when Kerr put Payton on Kevin Durant? And Nikola Jokić?

It seems unlikely that Payton will have a chance to make much of an impact during the rest of the regular season, but it’s not yet off the table.

The final roster spot

The Warriors still have an open roster spot, and Myers has spoken openly that many options are on the table. They could look to the buyout market, or even target a veteran who hasn’t played this year, like LaMarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony, or Hassan Whiteside.

Or they might convert one of their two-way contracts, Anthony Lamb and Ty Jerome. Lamb and Jerome have both played well enough to deserve a roster spot, though there’s only room for one ... at most. Right now it’s unclear who the Warriors would prefer, and it might depend on what the rest of the roster does. A healthy Curry limits the opportunities for Jerome. If Moses Moody earns playing time, or Andre Iguodala returns, that lessens the role for Lamb. The Dubs may take it down to the wire before making a decision.

Right now Jerome has 11 more games that he can play, and Lamb has seven.

Western Conference improvements

The 2023 trade deadline was one for the record books. There were too many trades to keep track of, with only two teams staying out of the action.

The West got a lot better ... but a lot more volatile. On paper, the Phoenix Suns (Kevin Durant), Dallas Mavericks (Kyrie Irving), and Los Angeles Clippers (Russell Westbrook) — three teams just ahead of the Warriors in the standings — got better. But all of those moves could backfire. The Suns gave up depth and one of the best defenders in the league for Durant, who is injured. The Mavericks are banking on a player who cannot be banked on. And the Clippers added a former MVP who is having an under-the-radar season but who has a habit for combusting teams.

The Lakers, who are currently outside of the play-in tournament, also got substantially better by adding D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, Rui Hachimura, and Jarred Vanderbilt, while the Memphis Grizzlies — the No. 2 seed — added one of the best shooters in the league in Luke Kennard.

How well those teams play — or don’t play — will factor into the Warriors success down the stretch.

Strength of schedule

According to Tankathon, the Warriors are in the middle of the pack in terms of their remaining schedule: it’s 16th-hardest. The good news for the Dubs is that the Clippers have the second-hardest schedule remaining, the Sacramento Kings have the fourth-hardest, and the Suns have the sixth-hardest.

Can the Warriors capitalize on not having an awful schedule in front of them? They’ll have to get to work immediately ... following Thursday’s visit to the Lakers’ cryptocurrency-themed arena, the Dubs will have five straight home games.

Bouncebacks for Poole and Wiggins

Two of the feel-good stories for the Warriors last year were the breakout campaigns for Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole. Both players have been solid contributors this season, but they’ve also regressed from last year.

Statistically, Wiggins is having a virtually identical season, but his defense is clearly not what it was a year ago, and it’s felt like his offense is not coming as naturally in the system, either. Poole has seen an efficiency drop-off, as his true-shooting percentage has fallen from an excellent 59.8% a year ago, to a mildly below league average 57.4% this year. He’s flashed excellence at times, but also cost the Warriors winnable games with poor decisions during clutch time.

If those players can return to their 2021-22 levels, the Dubs will be in much better shape.

These are the six biggest storylines for the final 24 games, but there are no shortage of others. Can Klay Thompson keep playing like this? Can Draymond Green avoid another tech? Will Steve Kerr solidify the rotations? Will Andre Iguodala return? Does Jonathan Kuminga have another gear?

Sukesh Chandrashekhar sends a Rs 100 cr legal notice to Chahatt Khanna, forcing her to withdraw the statement

 TV actress Chahatt Khanna had earlier revealed that Sukesh Chandrashekhar had proposed to her in the Tihar Jail and also given her expensive gifts. She tried to avoid him but he was adamant on having a relationship with her.

Just after the recording of TV actor Chahatt Khanna's statement before the judicial magistrate under Section 164 CrPC, the counsel of Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who is facing a trial in a Rs 200 crore extortion case, has sent the actor a Rs 100 crore legal notice.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar's counsel stated that her remarks caused "damage" to his reputation and "irreplaceable harm" to him. Sukesh's lawyer, Anant Malik, has demanded Chahatt to retract and remove her statement within seven days or face prosecution.

Chahatt Khanna testified before Patiala House Court on January 3 in connection with the extortion case of conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar.

In an exclusive conversation with the Bombay Times Chahatt had spoken about Sukesh and shared, "In May 2018 she got a call to attend a school event in Delhi as a judge. “I travelled to Delhi on May 18, 2018. At Mumbai airport, I met a woman named Angel Khan, who said she would accompany me to the event. When we landed in Delhi, we took a car to go to school. But after a while, we suddenly stopped and she said that we would have to change cars, as this one would not be allowed inside the school premises. We then moved to a grey Innova and within a few seconds, I realised we were outside the Tihar jail. When I asked her about this, she said we had to enter the school via the jail premises.”

She further shared about Sukesh's proposal in the jail and said, "He was dressed in a fancy shirt, had sprayed on a lot of perfume, and was wearing a gold chain. He introduced himself as the owner of a popular south Indian TV channel and the nephew of J Jayalalithaa. He said he had been arrested in an EVM-tampering case during elections but was being given VIP treatment in jail. He said he was a fan of mine and had watched my TV show, Bade Acche Lagte Hain, and wanted to meet me. I was frantic and told him, ‘Why would you call me here? I have left my six-month-old baby at home and have come here thinking it’s an event.’ Then, before I knew it, he went down on one knee and said he wanted to marry me. I shouted at him, saying, ‘I am married and I have two kids.’ But he said my husband was not the right man for me and that he would be a father to my kids. I got so anxious that I started crying.”

Early Details of Upcoming Oppo Find N-series Foldable Phone Leaked, Could be Find N3

 In December 2022, Oppo unveiled the Oppo Find N2 and Find N2 Flip foldable phones. The Find N2 is unlikely to release in the global market, but the N2 Flip is expected to arrive in markets outside of China as early as this month. While Oppo is gearing up for the global release, a new leak claims that it is also working on a new foldable phone for the Chinese market. Digital Chat Station, who is known for reliable leaks, has shared early details about the device.

According to the tipster, Oppo is working on an upcoming foldable phone with model number PHN110. He claimed that the device features an OLED LTPO panel that supports a screen resolution of 2260 x 2440 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz.

The screen resolution of the Oppo PHN110 foldable phone is higher than that of the Find N2. It appears that its display will be larger and will have less crease as compared to the Find N2. To recall, the N2 features a 7.1-inch foldable screen that offers a resolution of 1792 x 1920 pixels.

The Find N2 weighs around 237 grams and measures 7.4mm in thickness (unfolded state). The tipster claims that the company’s next foldable will be thinner and lighter. Unfortunately, the leaker did not share any information on the other specifications of the device. As per a recent leak, the upcoming Oppo foldable will have a 50-megapixel main camera and a periscope zoom camera.

The exact name of the foldable phone is not known yet. The display upgrade improvement that the Oppo PHN110 will provide suggests that it may be released as the Find N3. It is advisable to wait for further reports to know more about it.

OPPO Find N2 Flip global launch date has been officially announced. The brand made the announcement on its official Twitter handle. It is set to debut on February 15th in London at 14:30 GMT. The launch will also be live-streamed on the brand’s official YouTube channel.

The Find N2 Flip will be OPPO’s first-ever foldable smartphone in the global markets. It was launched in China last December. The upcoming offering is also confirmed to debut in the Indian markets as OPPO has put up a dedicated microsite on its official website. With the upcoming global debut of OPPO’s first foldable phone, the brand will compete against Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei. OPPO says that the Find N2 Flip is a culmination of five years of R&D—brings together the best in foldable technology and design to create an inflexion point in the flip phone industry.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip global variant is expected to pack the same specifications as its Chinese counterpart. The device features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display bearing an FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. There is a 3.26-inch secondary AMOLED screen. The flip phone has a creaseless design for an enhanced user experience. The upcoming offering has a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens. There is a 32MP selfie snapper. 

Under the hood, the OPPO Find N2 Flip is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor coupled with up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB storage. It is backed by a 4,300mAh battery unit with support for 44W fast charging. The device runs on Android 13 with ColorOS out of the box.

FIIs have increased their stake in Yes Bank by 11%; Should you buy the shares?

Private lenders like Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and IDFC First Bank bought a stake in Yes Bank in March 2020, after the handover of Yes Bank’s management to the State Bank of India (SBI). These shares were bought at ₹ 10 apiece. 

About 75 percent of the total shareholding in the bank is about to expire in March 2023 and there is a high risk of sell-off as a huge number of shares will become liquid. Yes Bank’s share price has almost doubled since the banks had invested in it, and there is a high chance that they might want to book profits once the lock-in period ends. 

Meanwhile, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have increased their stake in Yes Bank from 12.15 percent in the September quarter of 2022 to 23.24 percent in the December quarter of 2022. This means that they have increased their stake by 11.09 percent. 

The bank reported an 80 percent fall in its quarterly net profit for the three-month period ended December 2022 as its overall provisions rose to ₹ 845 crores during the October to December quarter of 2022, as compared to ₹ 375 crores in the same period a year ago. 

However, the bank’s asset quality improved as gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined to 2.02 percent of total loans, from 12.89 percent in the previous quarter whereas the net NPAs stood at 1.03 percent as compared to 3.60 percent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ). 

ICICI Securities sees a gradual turnaround in the relevant operating metrics driven by granular retail assets as well as liabilities and improved confidence in the stability of the franchise. It has maintained a ‘hold’ rating on the shares with a revised target price of ₹ 19.3 apiece. This translates to an upside of 13.52 percent as compared to Friday’s closing price of ₹ 17.00 apiece.
